Located in the north-west of Istria, Umag is Croatia's unique European entry-exit point, only 40 km from Trieste. The 18th-century Barocue church of St. Marija dominates the old town centre. Umag has been known as Istria's sporting centre for many years, being host to the ATP tournament and temporary home to numerous world tennis stars in July. In Umag's hinterland are little-known, hidden tourist attractions, such as mountaineering and cave axploration. For those with an equestrian bent there is also a riding centre in Umag. Numerous other events include Umag's Summer Concert, and the Feast of St. Roch, a four-day event in the middle of August in the nearby town of Brtonigla, dedicated to the town's patron saint. The festival of The Days of Church Organs, which features organs dating from the 17th and 18th centuries in a few of the local churches at the beginning of September, deserves special mention.
