Mljet Island

croatia, tourism, info, Travel, National parks MLJET The ISLAND OF MLJET is situated in the southernmost part of Croatia, west of Dubrovnik, unarguably Croatia’s best-known summer destination. The Mljet National Park includes the western part of the island, which some consider to be the most beautiful in the whole of the Adriatic. The park is characterised by two deep bays, which are referred to as lakes due to their extremely narrow passages to the open sea (Veliko and Malo jezero - Great Lake and Small Lake), as well as by lush and diverse Mediterranean flora. Mljet is also noted for its wealth of cultural heritage, the most impressive example of which is a Benedictine cloister complex dating from the 12th century. The cloister, situated on a small island in the centre of the Great Lake, is set within a Mediterranean park. Down the centuries, many chronicles, literary works and debate papers were written here and which today represent a precious heritage of Croatian history and culture. Within the monastery is the interesting church of St Mary. From the air, the Great Lake and the Small Lake do indeed look like lakes, although they are actually bays . Due to their narrow passage to the open sea the temperature of the lakes is much higher during summer than it is in the open sea. The rocky aspect of Mljet National Park comprises many caves and cliffs. Mljet National Park’s continental area is covered by dense Mediterranean pine woods which are especially attractive as the day draws to a close. Therefore, the favourite form of recreation for visitors is to cycle around the shores of Mljet’s lakes. Many pathways lead to the picturesque village of Gove.ari, and it is also possible to walk from Veliko to Malo jezero across 5 an old bridge. In order to protect nature, access for yachts and other vessels is permitted only up to the entrance to the Soline Strait leading to the bays of the Great and Small lakes. Special dispensation is given to excursion boats to navigate the lakes of the National Park, to kayaks and canoes , and to boats belonging to the few inhabitants of the several villages in this part of the island.
