Buje is situated at a height of 222 meters above sea level on a hilltop only 13 kilometers from Umag. Owing to its important strategic position during the past centuries the town was known as “the watchman of Istria”. The historic core is especially interesting: the main town square is completely surrounded by Venetian palaces, whereas the most interesting sacral structures are the Parish Church of St. Servulus from the 16th century and St. Mary’s Church from the 15th century. Today, the entire region of Buje is the most famous winegrowing part of Istria with numerous wine cellars and farmhouses (agritourism). From the hilltop there is a magnificent view of the surrounding fields, vineyards and olive groves. There are lovely medieval towns in the vicinity; the most famous ones are Grožnjan, Momjan and Završje.
